• Tone production: idiomatic of the instrument, (i.e., with vibrato on flute, double reeds, etc).
• Intonation: knows pitch tendencies characteristic to the instrument.
• Technique: can expressively perform a wide range of dynamics, tempo, and musical styles.

Violins, violas, cellos and basses make up the majority of an orchestra, while a concert band is made up of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. The orchestra also contains a wind section, but it is much smaller than that in a concert band.

A concert band's repertoire includes original wind compositions, transcriptions/arrangements of orchestral compositions, light music, and popular tunes. Though the instrumentation is similar, a concert band is distinguished from the marching band in that its primary function is as a concert ensemble.
