Different types of strikes in music
There are a few different types of strikes that can refer to in music:
**Appoggiaturas** - These are short grace notes that are written smaller than the primary note and are played slightly before the beat to ornament or decorate the melody. Appoggiaturas take up about half the value of the main note.
**Acciaccaturas** - Also known as a "crushed note", this is a grace note marked with a slash through the stem. Acciaccaturas are played very quickly before the beat with very little, if any, of the value of the primary note.
**Articulation marks** - Specific marks like staccato, tenuto or accent marks indicate that a note should be struck in a detached, legato or emphasized manner respectively.
**Drum strikes** - In percussion music, parts will contain notations for strikes on different drum parts like bass drum, snare drum, cymbals, etc. The notation indicates which drum to strike and with what stick or mallet.
