flute The xiao is an end-blown edge aerophone (flute) of the Han Chinese. The two xiao pictured here are typical of ones found in central China, especially the region around Shanghai. Another closely related flute called the dongxiao is prevalent along the southeast coast of China.

Xiao is a gender-neutral name of Chinese origin and has several meanings, but the most notable translations are “dawn”, “little”, and “reverent of the elderly.” Xiao's connotation with the morning will make natural early-risers fall in love with this precious moniker.

The Xiao (pronounced “show” as in “shower”) is an ancient Chinese vertical end blown flute, traditionally made from bamboo, and it is one of the most versatile open-hole flutes I've found.

More traditional xiao have six finger holes, while most modern ones have eight; the additional holes do not extend the instrument's range but instead make it easier to play notes such as F natural. There are a further four (sometimes two or six) sound holes situated at the bottom third of the length of the xiao.

Legend holds that this particular type of end-blown, notched flute was created by disassembling a panpipe called a paixiao and placing equidistant finger holes on each pipe. Used in Confucian ceremonies, including weddings and funerals, and often associated with scholars, xiao are sometimes inscribed with poems.

The xiao is often classified as a "notched flute", but this can be misleading. The vast majority of notched flutes have the mouth end of the tube completely open, and a notch carved into the rim at one point, while the mouth end of the xiao is mostly closed; see the photo below.

In terms of raw power, Xiao performs well enough to clear all content including 36-star Abyss without needing premium supports or weapons. You always want to pair Xiao with an elemental battery for energy and a healer since he constantly loses HP during his burst.
