Tyzen Hsiao, also known as Xiao Tianci, was a Taiwanese composer who created music that uniquely blended elements of Chinese and Western musical traditions. He is considered one of the most important composers in Taiwan's modern history.

Born in 1938 in Taiwan, Hsiao showed an early interest in music and began his formal training in classical music at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts. He later went on to study composition at the Boston Conservatory of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music.

Throughout his career, Hsiao was dedicated to incorporating traditional Chinese music into his compositions, often using Chinese instruments alongside Western ones. He is perhaps best known for his piece "The Cape of Good Hope," which was inspired by the famous landmark in South Africa and was later adapted into a Taiwanese patriotic song.

Hsiao's unique approach to music made him a beloved figure in Taiwan and earned him numerous accolades, including the National Award for Arts in 1989. He passed away in 2015 at the age of 77, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneer of modern Taiwanese music.
