Huang Ruo is a Chinese-born composer who has been making waves in the classical music scene for years. Born in 1976 in Hainan, China, Ruo started his musical career by studying piano at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. However, it wasn't until he moved to New York City to attend the Juilliard School that he found his true calling as a composer.
Ruo's music is known for its unique blend of Eastern and Western influences, as well as its use of non-traditional instruments and techniques. He has been commissioned by some of the biggest names in classical music, including the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic.
One of his most notable works is "Dr. Sun Yat-sen," an opera that tells the story of the life of the revolutionary leader who helped overthrow China's Qing dynasty. The opera premiered in Hong Kong in 2013 and has since been performed in cities around the world.
In addition to his work as a composer, Ruo is also an accomplished conductor and educator. He has conducted multiple orchestras and ensembles around the world, and has taught at institutions including the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
