Stephen Chatman CM, DMA, is a prolific Canadian composer and Professor of Composition at the University of British Columbia. He was born in Toronto, Canada, on November 28, 1950, and began his musical career as a chorister, arranger, and composer. Chatman has composed works for a variety of genres, including choral, orchestral, chamber, and vocal music, and his music has been performed and recorded by numerous ensembles and soloists in Canada, the United States, and abroad.
Chatman's style is characterized by its tunefulness, lyricism, and accessibility, and he often draws on influences from a wide range of musical genres, including jazz, folk, pop, and world music. Many of his works feature texts by contemporary poets, including his wife and frequent collaborator, Tara Wohlberg.
Over the course of his career, Chatman has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to Canadian music, including the Order of Canada, the country's highest civilian honor, and the Order of British Columbia. He has also won multiple Juno awards, the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy Awards.
