Abram Chasins (1903-1987) was a highly accomplished American composer, pianist, piano teacher, lecturer, musicologist, music broadcaster and radio executive. He began his career as a pianist and composer , but soon became known for his talent as a broadcaster and writer, making him one of the best-known cultural commentators in the United States.
Chasins was born in New York City in 1903 and began studying piano as a child. He graduated from Columbia University's School of Journalism in 1924 and began his career as a composer, pianist and music teacher. He went on to become a music critic for the New York American and News-Week magazines, and was later appointed music director of WQXR, a radio station in New York City.
As a performer, Chasins was highly regarded for his virtuosity on the piano and his ability to convey the spirit of the music he played. He gave many solo performances throughout his career and also performed as a concerto soloist with major orchestras in the United States.
Chasins is best known for his compositions, which include works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, solo piano, and voice.
