Full biography Stefano Bernardi
Stefano Bernardi, also known as "il Moretto," was an Italian composer , music theorist, and priest, born on March 18, 1580, in Verona, Italy. He studied music in his hometown, and later in Rome with Giovanni de Macque and Anerio, where he developed his skills as a composer and a musician.
Bernardi's musical career was dedicated primarily to church music, writing a significant number of masses, psalms, hymns, and other choral works. However, he also composed secular music, including instrumental music and a few vocal pieces.
In addition to his musical compositions, Bernardi is known for his treatise on counterpoint, published in 1615, titled "Regole di contrappunto." This work presented a systematic approach to the study of the rules of counterpoint in music, and it became a reference book for composers and music theorists of that time.
Bernardi spent his last years as the maestro di cappella of the Basilica of Santa Barbara in Mantua. He passed away on February 15, 1637, leaving behind a significant legacy in the musical world of the Baroque era. Today, his music is still performed and studied by musicians and scholars worldwide, and his treatise on counterpoint remains an essential reference for the study of music theory.
