Arnell began composing at an early age and studied music at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 1938, he won the Royal Philharmonic Society Prize, which helped to launch his career. Between 1939 and 1947, he wrote his first important compositions , including his first three symphonies.
During World War II , Arnell traveled to the United States for a concert tour and found himself stranded there for the duration of the war. While in America, he composed a number of works, including his Fourth Symphony.
Arnell's music was often characterized by its lush orchestration and melodic lyricism, and he was influenced by a number of different composers, including Stravinsky, Copland, and Sibelius. Despite his talent and critical success during his lifetime, Arnell's music has been somewhat neglected since his death.
