Short bio Thomas Arne
Full biography Thomas Arne
Thomas Augustine Arne (1710-1778) was an English composer who is best known for his contribution to British theatre through his musical compositions. He was born in Covent Garden, London, to a family of upholsterers, and showed a talent for music at a young age. He was a chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral, and later studied with the composer and organist Michael Festing.
Arne’s compositions were primarily for the theatre, and he is known to have written music for about 90 stage works between 1733 and 1776. He was soon engaged to write musical afterpieces and incidental music for London’s Drury Lane Theatre , and his compositions were met with great success. Some of his most notable works include the music for John Gay’s “The Beggar’s Opera,” as well as music for William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” and “Twelfth Night.”
Arne is also famous for his patriotic song, “Rule, Britannia!,” which he set to music in 1740 and quickly became a popular anthem in Britain. He also composed the official version of “God Save the King” in 1745.
Despite his popularity in his time, Arne’s music was largely forgotten after his death. However, in recent years, there has been a renewed interest in his music, and some of his works have been performed and recorded by modern musicians.
Overall, Thomas Arne was a prolific and important composer in 18th century Britain, whose contributions to theatre music and patriotic anthems continue to be celebrated and valued today.
