Short bio Philippe Gaubert
Full biography Philippe Gaubert
Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a French composer, conductor, and flautist. He is considered to be one of the most important musicians in Paris during the early 1900s. Gaubert's music is known for its melodic and harmonic richness, and it has a distinctive French quality.
Although Gaubert began his musical career as a flautist, he also became a conductor, leading the Paris Opéra and the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire. He is also known for his teaching, having taught at the Paris Conservatoire, where he had studied himself. His students included such notable musicians as Marcel Moyse and Jean-Pierre Rampal.
Gaubert wrote music in various genres, including operas, ballets, orchestral works, chamber music, as well as solo pieces for the flute. He composed more than 80 works, and some of his most famous pieces are Sonatine for Flute and Piano, Nocturne et Allegro Scherzando for flute and piano, and Madrigal for flute, violin, and piano.
Despite being considered a "weekend composer", Gaubert's music has become an essential aspect of the flute repertoire. Today, many flute players study his works and perform them in competitions and concerts.
Overall, Philippe Gaubert's contributions to music have been significant, not only in his compositions but also in his work as a conductor and teacher.
