Denis Gaultier was a French composer and lutenist who lived during the Baroque period. Born in Paris in 1597, he was the son of a musician who trained him in music. Gaultier became a skilled lute player at a young age and was soon recognized as a virtuoso performer.

He began his career as a musician in the court of King Louis XIII, where he played for the royal family and other members of the court. Gaultier was known for his unique approach to the lute, combining the traditional French style with the Italian style, which made him popular among the aristocracy.

In addition to his performances, Gaultier was also known for his compositional skills. He wrote a number of solo lute pieces, as well as songs and ballets for the court.
