Ennemond Gaultier was a French composer and lutenist who lived during the Baroque period in the 17th century. He was born in Lyon in 1575 and began his career in music as a child prodigy. Gaultier was greatly influenced by the Italian Baroque style and spent much of his career working in France, where he was known for his elegant and intricate lute music.
Gaultier's music was highly regarded during his lifetime and was played at the French court, where he served as a lutenist for King Louis XIII. He was admired for his skill in improvisation and his ability to create complex and refined compositions for the lute. Gaultier's talent was also recognized by his contemporaries, including the composer and lutenist, Denis Gaultier, who was possibly his younger brother or cousin.
Gaultier's music is characterized by its expressive harmonies, ornate embellishments, and sophisticated use of counterpoint. His most significant works include his collections of lute music, which are considered some of the most important musical works of the Baroque era. These collections include "La Rhétorique des dieux " and "La Guitarre royale."
