Full biography Nikolay Sokolov
Nikolay Sokolov was a Russian composer who lived from 1859 to 1922. He was born in Moscow and began his musical studies there. He also studied in Saint Petersburg, where he became a pupil of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
Sokolov wrote a number of operas, including "The Maid of Orleans," which was based on the life of Joan of Arc, "In the Storm," which was set during the Russian Revolution, and "The Golden Cockerel," an adaptation of a fairy tale by Alexander Pushkin.
In addition to his operas, Sokolov also wrote chamber music, including several string quartets, and piano works. He was considered a master of orchestration and his music is noted for its colorful and imaginative use of harmony.
Sokolov's career was cut short by the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, which led to significant changes in music education and the arts in Russia. He died in poverty in Moscow in 1922. Despite his relatively short life and career, Sokolov left a lasting impact on Russian music and is remembered as one of the leading composers of his time.
