August Söderman was a renowned Swedish composer, conductor, and music critic, born on October 7, 1832, in Stockholm, Sweden. He was among the first generation of Swedish-born composers who went abroad to study music and later brought back new and modern ideas. Söderman received his education in music at the University of Uppsala, where he studied under famous composer and expert in orchestration, Franz Berwald.

Söderman's music has been described as elegant, lyrical, and simple. He was known for incorporating Swedish folk melodies into his compositions, which made him a significant figure in the nationalistic musical movement that swept across Europe during the 19th century.

Söderman's early works include chamber music, such as his String Quartet in D Major and Piano Trio in C Minor. He later made a name for himself as a composer of choral and orchestral works, including the famous "Folk Symphony," which incorporates Swedish folk tunes into a symphonic form. Other notable works by Söderman include his opera, "Fritiofs Saga," and his "Swedish Rhapsody No. 1."

In addition to his work as a composer, Söderman also served as a music critic for many years, writing for various newspapers in Stockholm. He was also one of the founding members of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.

August Söderman died on February 13, 1876, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most prominent figures in Swedish classical music history. Today, his compositions continue to be performed worldwide.
