Mikhail Sokolovsky was a Russian composer who lived during the Classical period. He was one of the classical-period composers who wrote music in Russia. Sokolovsky wrote musical compositions for Saint Petersburg Conservatory, and was also a teacher at the Conservatory where he instructed such renowned composers as Victor Kosenko. The composer wrote musical comedies, bridging the transition to the new genre of comic opera in Russia. Sokolovsky's operas include The Coachmen at the Horse, A Cheat and a Matchmaker, and The Carriage Accident. He was also a famous conductor, arranging many operas. In addition to being a composer, Sokolovsky also taught philosophy and history and wrote for some post-graduate magazines. Mikhail Sokolovsky is among the Russian classical composers who contributed significantly to Russian opera, and his works are still performed today.
