Short bio Maurice Emmanuel
Full biography Maurice Emmanuel
Maurice Emmanuel was a French composer of classical music and musicologist born on May 2 , 1862, in Bar-sur-Aube, a small town in the Champagne-Ardenne region of France. He was a versatile musician who also worked as an art history professor. He wrote a treatise in 1895 on the music of Ancient Greece , which led to his appointment as professor of the history of music at the Paris Conservatory in 1920.
Emmanuel's music was influenced by César Franck and he emerged as an individual voice in his early works, as seen in the three chamber music and songs compositions. He has been categorized as an "impressionist" composer, though his music is not as well-known as the likes of Debussy or Ravel. He composed a range of music, including operas, orchestral works, chamber music, and solo pieces, but only a few are still performed today.
Emmanuel was also known for his dedication to music education and held several teaching positions throughout his career. He died on December 14, 1938. Despite his relative obscurity in today's musical world, Maurice Emmanuel's contributions to music and musicology during his lifetime were significant and valuable.
