Lewis Spratlan was an American composer of contemporary classical music. He was born on September 5, 1940, and passed away on February 9, 2023. He also taught at Amherst College for many years, where he inspired generations of young composers.
Spratlan's music has been widely performed and he has received numerous honors throughout his career. In 2000, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in music for a concert version of Act Two of his opera "Life is a Dream". He also received the Charles Ives Opera Prize and Virgil Thomson Award in Vocal Music in 2016 for his opera "Mortgaging the Earth" with libretto by James Maraniss.
Spratlan's compositions are known for their complexity and use of atonality. He was a true artist who valued music for music's sake, free from any external ideological influences. In fact, he once stated that he considers himself free of any ideology beyond that which is contained by music itself, such as the laws of counterpoint and principles of movement.
