John Joseph Akar (1927-1975) was a Sierra Leonean composer , entertainer, writer, and diplomat. He is best known as the composer of the national anthem of Sierra Leone , "High We Exalt Thee, Realm of the Free." Akar served as Sierra Leonean ambassador to the United States and was also a columnist and humorist.

In addition to his work as a diplomat and writer , Akar was a talented musician and composer. He studied music at the Royal Academy of Music in London and went on to compose music for a number of theatrical productions and films.

Akar was also a prominent figure in the Sierra Leonean independence movement and was involved in the drafting of the country's constitution. In recognition of his contributions to the country, the John Akar Independence Trust was established in his honor , and an annual music festival, the John Akar Independence Music Festival, is held in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
