Doris Akers was a prominent American gospel music composer, singer, and pianist. She was born in Brookfield, Missouri on May 21, 1923, and started playing piano at a young age. By the time she was just 6 years old, Akers was already composing and performing music with her family's gospel group.

In the 1940s, Akers moved to Los Angeles, where she formed the Doris Akers Choir, which quickly gained recognition for their dynamic and soulful performances. In 1945, Akers and her choir recorded their first hit song, "I Want A Double Portion Of God's Love," which became an instant success in the gospel music world.

Over the years, Akers continued to write and record numerous hit songs, including "Sweet Jesus," "Lead On," and "You Can't Beat God's Giving," which have become some of the most beloved gospel songs of all time. Akers' music was known for its powerful vocal harmonies, memorable melodies, and heartfelt lyrics, which were often inspired by her own personal experiences of faith and spirituality.
