Jan Nepomuk Skroup (1811-1892) was a Czech composer and conductor, best known for his composition of the Czech national anthem, Kde domov můj. He was born in the town of Osice, in what was then the Austrian Empire, and began his musical training as a child. Later, he studied in Prague and became a well-known musician in his native country.

Skroup composed a number of operas, choral works, and instrumental pieces throughout his career, but his most enduring legacy is undoubtedly his composition of Kde domov můj. The anthem was written in response to a call for a national song that would represent the Czech people during a period of political unrest in the mid-19th century. Skroup's composition was chosen as the winner of the competition in 1834, and has been the official anthem of the Czech Republic since the country's formation in 1993.

Despite the lasting fame of Kde domov můj, Skroup remained a relatively obscure figure in the classical music world. He spent much of his life working as a conductor and music teacher, and only achieved significant recognition for his compositions later in life. Nevertheless, his contribution to Czech music and culture is immeasurable, and his legacy lives on through the continued use of his national anthem.
