Herman Bellstedt (1858-1926) was a prominent American cornetist, conductor, and composer known for his contributions to the band music genre in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was born in Germany but immigrated to the United States in 1867 with his family. As a young musician, he began playing in local orchestras and eventually made a name for himself as a virtuoso cornetist.

As a conductor and composer, Bellstedt wrote numerous works for the concert and band repertoire, including marches, overtures, and solos for cornet and other instruments. His most famous work is probably "Napoli," a virtuosic theme and variations for solo cornet and band based on the Neapolitan song "Funiculì, Funiculà" by Luigi Denza. Bellstedt also wrote twelve technical studies for cornet that are still widely used by brass players today.

In addition to his compositions, Bellstedt was also an influential teacher and mentor to many young musicians, including future famous cornetists like Frank Simon and Herbert L. Clarke. He served as the bandmaster of the U.S. Marine Band from 1892 to 1897 and was a member of the famous John Philip Sousa Band for several years.

Overall, Herman Bellstedt was an important figure in the development of American band music, with a particular focus on the cornet. His compositions and technical studies continue to be studied and performed by brass musicians today, cementing his legacy as a significant contributor to the brass band repertoire.
