Gunther Schuller (1925-2015) was an American composer, conductor, horn player, author, historian, educator, and publisher. He was known for his ability to bridge classical music and jazz, and his wide range of activities in both genres.

During his career, Schuller wrote more than 200 compositions , including solo and orchestral works , chamber music, opera, and jazz. He also served as the director of the Berkshire Music Center, taught music and composition at Yale and the Manhattan School of Music , and wrote several books on music.

Schuller was born in New York City in 1925. He began playing the horn at a young age and later studied at the Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School. As a young man, he was influenced by both classical music and jazz, and he became interested in combining the two genres in his compositions.

In addition to his work as a composer, Schuller was also an accomplished conductor and performer. He conducted many major orchestras around the world, including the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Throughout his career, Schuller remained committed to promoting contemporary music and supporting fellow composers. He was a prolific writer and lecturer, and his contributions to the field of music continue to be celebrated today.

Sadly, Schuller passed away in 2015 at the age of 89. However, his legacy as a pioneering composer, conductor, and educator continues to inspire musicians and music lovers around the world.
