Full biography Eugene Aynsley Goossens
Eugene Aynsley Goossens was an English conductor and composer born on May 26 , 1893, in Camden Town, London. He was the son of the Belgian conductor and violinist Eugene Goossens Sr. and the brother of the composer and pianist Léon Goossens and the oboist Sidonie Goossens.
As a young man, Goossens studied music with his father and went on to become a student at the Royal College of Music in London. He quickly established himself as a talented conductor and composer, and by the age of 23, he had already made his conducting debut at the Queen's Hall in London.
Throughout his career, Goossens developed a reputation as an innovative composer who was willing to incorporate new ideas and influences into his work. He composed in a variety of genres, including orchestral works, chamber music, operas, and film scores. Some of his most famous compositions include his Oboe Concerto, his Symphony No. 1, and his opera, Judith.
In addition to his work as a composer, Goossens also had a successful career as a conductor. He served as the conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in the United States from 1923 to 1931 and then became the conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra from 1931 to 1946. He also made numerous guest appearances with major orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic.
Goossens was a prominent figure in the music world during the first half of the 20th century, and his influence on modern classical music cannot be overstated. Despite his many successes, however, his career was not without controversy. In 1942, Goossens was arrested in New York City for trying to bring obscene materials into the country. The scandal caused him to resign from his position with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and he returned to England to continue his career.
Goossens passed away on June 13, 1962, in Hillingdon, Middlesex. Today, he is remembered as one of the most important composers and conductors of his generation, and his contributions to classical music continue to be celebrated and studied by musicians and scholars around the world.
