Grzegorz Gerwazy Gorczycki was a Polish composer, born in 1665 in the city of Rohatyn, in what is now Ukraine. He is considered to be one of the most important composers of the Polish Baroque period.
Gorczycki belonged to the generation of Polish composers who were trained in Italy, and he brought with him the latest Italian influences to Polish music. He was a versatile composer, writing both sacred and secular music. His sacred choral music, in particular, was greatly admired, and he is regarded as one of the leading composers of sacred music of his time.
Gorczycki is best known for his polychoral compositions, which were written for multiple choirs and orchestras. He was one of the pioneers of this style, and his works showcase the dynamic and dramatic possibilities of this musical form. His works were often written for important occasions, such as the coronation of kings and queens.
Some of his most famous works include the Missa Rorate coeli, the Dixit Dominus, and the Completorium. His music was highly respected during his lifetime, and he was often compared to the great composers of his time, such as Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel.
