Elaine "Ray" Barkin, born on December 15, 1932, was an American composer, writer, and educator. She grew up in New York City and studied composition and music theory at Queens College , City University of New York , and Brandeis University. Barkin was known for her avant-garde style and experimental music that incorporated unique timbres, extended techniques, and unconventional notations.
Throughout her career, Barkin composed numerous works for various ensembles, including solo pieces, chamber music, orchestral music, and electronic music. She was also a dedicated writer and educator, having taught at various institutions such as California Institute of the Arts and the University of California, San Diego. Her writings on music and culture were often critically acclaimed, and her essays and articles appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Village Voice.
Some of Barkin's notable compositions include "Neon," "Ebb Tide," "Four Songs," and "Lifeworks." She received many prestigious awards and grants for her work, such as the Guggenheim Fellowship and Prix de Rome. Moreover, Barkin was a founding member of the California EAR Unit, a contemporary music ensemble dedicated to the presentation of new music.
