Dora Estella Bright (1862 – 1951) was a British composer, pianist, and teacher born in Sheffield. She was regarded as one of the most talented and accomplished female composers of her era. Bright studied at the Royal Academy of Music, where she excelled in the study of piano and composition, winning prizes for her work.
Bright’s works were often inspired by the poetry of her friend, the writer Olive Custance, with whom she collaborated on several projects. She composed in many genres and her works include over 200 songs, chamber music, solo piano works, an opera, and an oratorio. Among her most notable works is her Symphony in A minor, which was premiered in 1897 at the St. James's Hall in London.
In her lifetime, Bright was highly respected and recognized for her contributions to music. She was an active member of the Society of Women Musicians and the Incorporated Society of Musicians. She worked tirelessly to promote the cause of women in music, using her position and influence to encourage the education and advancement of female musicians.
Despite her achievements and accolades, Bright’s work fell into obscurity after her death in 1951. However, in recent years, there has been renewed interest in her works, with scholars and musicians rediscovering her music and recognizing her as a major force in the British musical landscape of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
