Daniel E. Gawthrop is an American composer who was born in Fort Wayne , Indiana in 1949. He is primarily known for his choral music, but has also composed a significant body of works for the organ. Gawthrop has been the recipient of over one hundred commissions to write original music , and his pieces have been performed by choirs across the United States and around the world.
One of Gawthrop's most famous works is his choral motet "Sing Me to Heaven," which has become one of the most frequently performed choral pieces of modern times. The piece was commissioned by Carol Hunter and premiered in 1991. Gawthrop has explained that he is often asked about this piece more than any other title he has composed.
In addition to "Sing Me to Heaven," Gawthrop has also composed numerous other well-known choral works, including "All You Works of God," "Mary Speaks," and "Rosa Mystica." He has also written pieces for the organ, such as "An American Organbook," which was commissioned by the American Guild of Organists and premiered in 1999.
Gawthrop has received many awards and honors throughout his career, including grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Indiana Arts Commission. He has also served as Composer-in-Residence to the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra in Virginia for three years.
