Pierre Gaveaux (1761-1825) was a French opera singer and composer who is best known for his opera "L'Amour Conjugal" (also known as "Leonore"), which was first performed in 1798 with a libretto by Jean-Nicolas Bouilly. This opera was later adapted by Beethoven into his famous opera "Fidelio". Gaveaux composed a total of 15 operas, as well as songs, duets, and other vocal works. He was also a highly respected singing teacher and voice coach, counting among his students renowned soprano Caroline Branchu. In addition to his work in music, Gaveaux was also an accomplished painter and architect. Despite his success during his lifetime, his music is not widely performed today, and he is not as well-known as some of his contemporaries. However, his contribution to the development of French opera cannot be underestimated.
