Full biography Noel Gay
Noel Gay was a successful composer and songwriter born on July 15, 1898 in Wakefield, England. His birth name was Reginald Moxon Armitage but he chose to use the name Noel Gay when he started writing popular songs as his career began to take off. While studying at Cambridge, he developed a keen interest in musical comedy, and he began writing popular songs to avoid his family's disapproval of his chosen career path.
Gay gained recognition in the early 1920s after being asked by famous comedian and producer Charlot to write all the music for his 1926 Revue. He went on to write music for numerous stage productions and popular songs, becoming a well-known and respected composer in the British music scene.
Some of his most famous songs include "Run Rabbit Run," "Leaning on a Lamp-Post," and "The Sun Has Got His Hat On," which has been covered by several artists over the years. Along with his success in musical theatre, Gay also composed music for films and television.
Gay passed away on March 4, 1954, leaving behind a rich legacy of music that continues to be enjoyed today. His songs have been covered by numerous artists and feature in many British productions, making him one of the most influential composers of his time.
