Short bio Charles Griffes
Full biography Charles Griffes
Charles Tomlinson Griffes was an American composer born on September 17, 1884. He is known for his works for piano, chamber ensembles, and voice, and was the first native U.S. composer to write Impressionist music. Griffes initially intended to become a concert pianist and went to Berlin to study, where he was influenced by German composers and enjoyed a brief but formative mentorship under Engelbert Humperdinck.
Griffes began writing music while in Berlin, and upon returning to the U.S. in 1907, he became the director of music at the Hackley School in Tarrytown, New York. He continued to compose and gained recognition for his works, which are known for their sensuous and demanding nature.
Griffes was not widely recognized during his lifetime, but his contributions to American modernist music have been recognized and celebrated posthumously. His music has been described as a unique fusion of traditional Western European and modern American musical styles, and his works are characterized by their rich harmonies and intricate textures.
Some of his notable works include the "Poem for Flute and Orchestra," "The White Peacock," and "The Pleasure-Dome of Kubla Khan." Even to date, his compositions continue to be studied and performed.
Overall, Charles Griffes was an influential American composer who made significant contributions to modernist music in the United States.
