Bruce Carlson (1944-2021) was a Canadian composer known for his contributions to contemporary classical music. His work spanned a wide range of genres, including chamber music, orchestral works, and electronic music. Carlson was born in Toronto, Canada, and studied at the University of Toronto and the University of Michigan.

Throughout his career, Carlson was recognized for his innovative approach to composition and his ability to blend traditional forms with avant-garde techniques. He was a founding member of the contemporary concert series IZ Music ), along with fellow Manitoba composers Peter Allen, William Pura, and Dwight Andrews. Carlson's compositions have been performed by major orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the National Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart.

In addition to his work as a composer, Carlson was also a respected music educator. He taught composition at the University of California, San Diego, and was a visiting professor at numerous other institutions throughout his career.

Carlson passed away in the summer of 2021 at the age of 77, leaving behind a legacy of innovative and influential works that continue to be performed and celebrated today.
