Mark Carlson is a composer and professor of composition at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. He is also the founder and artistic director of Pacific Serenades. Carlson is known for his contributions to the classical music genre and for his efforts to create opportunities for composers and performers to collaborate.

One of Carlson's notable achievements is his commissioning of a Grammy-nominated piece by an ensemble for a composer to write a piece for them to perform. He has also commissioned works for his own recording project entitled "Espejos (Mirrors)" in which three composers from Mexico and three from the United States were commissioned to write 10-minute pieces.

As a musician , Carlson has performed as a soloist, clinician, and chamber musician domestically and abroad. His primary instruments include euphonium , trombone, and baritone horn. Carlson is also an author and has written reviews for academic journals.
