Short bio Benjamin Godard
Full biography Benjamin Godard
Benjamin Louis Paul Godard was a French violinist and Romantic-era composer who lived from August 18 , 1849, to January 10, 1895. He was of Jewish extraction and is known for his versatile musical style, which includes operas, symphonies, string quartets, concertos, and piano pieces. Despite having a relatively short life, Godard wrote a large number of compositions that gained popularity during his time.
At the young age of ten, Godard began studying at the Paris Conservatoire, where he demonstrated his exceptional musical abilities. He won the Prix de la Ville de Paris in 1878 with his symphony called Le Tasso , and from that time until his death, he wrote many more significant works.
Godard was highly regarded in France during his lifetime, and his music was enjoyed by audiences throughout Europe. He has been described as a "genial composer who has supplied us with so much handsome music," and his Symphonie gothique has been hailed as a "very original and interesting work."
Although he was known for his ability to write in various musical genres , Godard's works were eventually overshadowed by the emerging impressionist movement, which dominated French music towards the end of the 19th century. Nevertheless, his contributions to the Romantic-era music scene in France cannot be understated.
