Bombard

The bombard is a woodwind instrument, and a member of the shawm family. Like most shawms, it has a broad and very powerful sound, vaguely resembling a trumpet. It is played as other shawms are played, with the double reed placed between the lips.

Bombard chanters are usually made of brass or bronze, and have a cylindrical shape with a flared bell at one end. Bombard chanters are played by blowing into a mouthpiece attached to the side of the instrument. The player's lips vibrate against a metal reed, which produces a buzzing sound.

The bombard is a double-reed instrument in the oboe family found mainly in Brittany, in northwest France. Although the name bombard can be found in texts going back to the Middle Ages, it only became attached to the instrument in its current form from the 19th century.

Great Bombards cost more resources, train slower, have a higher Rate of Fire (which makes them fire slower), and take one more population space than the regular Bombard, but have higher hit points and do splash damage.

The Ottoman army's bombards played a key role in its successful conquest of Constantinople during the epic siege of 1453. In the 15th century the great powers of medieval Europe paid talented gunsmiths to build massive bombards to batter walls and shorten the length of sieges.
