Meaning of Aleatory Music in Music
Aleatory music, also known as chance music or indeterminate music, is a genre of music in which some elements of the composition or performance are left to chance or the determination of the performer(s). The term "aleatory" comes from the Latin word "alea," meaning "dice," highlighting the element of chance involved in this type of music. In aleatory music, the composer may introduce elements of unpredictability or randomness into the composition, allowing for variations in the realization of the piece. This can include leaving certain sections of the music open to improvisation or providing vague directives for the performers to follow. The use of chance or indeterminate elements in aleatory music can result in unique and unpredictable performances, adding an element of spontaneity and exploration to the musical experience.
Music in which the composer introduces the elements of chance or unpredictability with regard to either the composition or its performance. This is not a 20th century invention as it was known in the 18th century in the form of dice music in which dice were used to determine which measures of the music would be performed.
