All-female barbershop quartets were often called beauty shop quartets, a term that has fallen out of favor. The voice parts for women's and mixed barbershop groups use the same names as those for male groups since the roles perform similar functions in the quartet although the vocal ranges may be different.

A trio is a group of three people who are playing musical instruments or singing together. The word "trio" may also refer to the piece of music that they are playing. Three people who are singing together are a "vocal trio". Classical composers writing chamber music very often wrote trios.

Soprano is the highest sounding voice and alto is the lower sounding voice. Male voices are classified as tenor (highest), baritone (medium high), and bass (lowest). Voice classification is a tool for singers, composers, venues, and listeners to categorize vocal properties and to associate roles with voices.

Choral music includes four voices: soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. Often the soprano sings the melody (or main tune) of the song, and the other three voices harmonize.
