Zsigmond Szathmary (born May 28, 1939) is a Hungarian-Canadian organist, composer, and conductor. He is known for his expertise in playing and interpreting contemporary organ music and has recorded extensively. Szathmary was born in Budapest and began playing the organ at the age of six. He later studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and graduated in 1961.
Szathmary moved to Canada in 1967 and became a professor at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He also served as the organist and choir director at Saint Joseph's Basilica. In addition to his performing and teaching career, Szathmary is also an accomplished composer and has written pieces for organ, choir, and orchestra. He has received numerous awards for his contributions to contemporary music, including the Order of Canada in 1985.
Szathmary has collaborated with many well-known composers and has premiered works by Gyorgy Ligeti, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Gyorgy Kurtag, among others. He has also written pieces inspired by Hungarian folk music and culture. In addition to his work as a performer and composer, Szathmary is also a musicologist and has published several scholarly articles and books on music.
Szathmary's dedication to promoting contemporary music and his virtuosic performances have made him a respected figure in the classical music world. His recordings and performances continue to inspire and influence musicians and audiences around the world.
