He began his music career as a bassist and spent several years touring with various music groups before transitioning to composition and production. In 2003, Smith released his debut album, "The Mouth of Ghosts," which showcased his skills as a composer and musician.

Since then, he has worked on numerous film and television projects as a composer and music producer, including the scores for the TV series "Rome" and "Deadwood." He has also collaborated with various artists, including John Hiatt and Mike Campbell.
