Sydney Smith (14 July 1839 – 3 March 1889) was an English pianist and composer during the Victorian era ). He was born in Dorset, England, and received his education at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Smith is known for his contributions to English music during the latter half of the 19th century.
Smith was a prolific composer, with much of his music written for the piano. His compositions were known for their lyrical qualities, as well as their romantic flair. Smith was a contemporary of other English composers, such as Edward Elgar and Arthur Sullivan.
Some of Sydney Smith's most notable compositions include his Sonata for Piano (1878), his Prelude, Chorale, and Fugue for Organ (1880), and his Burlesque for Piano (1881). Additionally, Smith composed a number of songs, many of which were published without opus numbers.
Although Smith was not as well known as some of his contemporaries, his music was well-regarded and helped to pave the way for future generations of English composers. He remained active as a performer and composer until his death in 1889 at the age of 49.
