William Michael Rooke (1794-1847) was an Irish composer and violinist. He is best known for his operatic works, particularly his opera "Amilie, or the Love Test," which was composed to a libretto by John Thomas Haines. Rooke lived in Dublin and began his career as a violinist before turning to composing, working closely with fellow Irish composer Michael William Balfe. Rooke also wrote chamber music and songs, and his works were performed at important venues in London, including the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Although he never achieved the same level of success as Balfe, who was a close personal friend, Rooke was recognized as an important figure in the Irish musical scene of the early 19th century. Unfortunately, many of his compositions have been lost over the years, but his contributions to the development of Irish opera are recognized and celebrated by music historians and enthusiasts alike.
