Full biography Virgil Thomson
Virgil Thomson (November 25 , 1896 – September 30, 1989) was a prolific American composer, critic and author. He is renowned for his contributions to American classical music and for his unique approach to composition, which combined classical and modernist aesthetics. Thomson was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and began piano and organ lessons at a young age. He went on to study composition at Harvard University, where he was introduced to the works of Stravinsky and other modernist composers.
Over the course of his career, Thomson composed music for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. He also wrote vocal music, including operas and choral works. Thomson is perhaps best known for his scores for documentaries and other films, including Robert Flaherty's Louisiana Story, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1949. His other notable works include Four Saints in Three Acts and The Mother of Us All , both of which were collaborations with writer Gertrude Stein.
In addition to his work as a composer, Thomson was a respected music critic and journalist. He wrote for the New York Herald Tribune and the New York Post, and later became the chief music critic for the New York Herald Tribune. Thomson's music criticism was known for its wit and erudition, and he became a prominent voice in American music criticism during the mid-20th century.
