Vincenzo Capirola (1474 - after 1548) was an Italian composer, lutenist and nobleman of the Renaissance era. He is considered one of the most important composers and performers of lute music of his time and is known for his unique and highly expressive style in compositions.
His music is preserved in an illuminated manuscript known as the Capirola Lutebook , compiled by one of his pupils. The manuscript is an important source for Italian lute music of the period and contains a wide range of compositions including fantasias , ricercars, and dances.
Capirola's music is notable for its innovative use of harmony and counterpoint, as well as its expressive use of dissonance. His compositions are often complex and technically challenging, demonstrating his virtuosity on the lute.
Although not much is known about his life, it is believed that Capirola was a member of the noble class and may have served as a lutenist in the court of the Gonzaga family in Mantua. He enjoyed great success during his lifetime and his music was highly influential for future generations of lutenists and composers.
