Umberto Giordano was an Italian composer born on August 28, 1867, in Foggia, southern Italy. He grew up in a family of musicians and began piano lessons at an early age. Later on, he received formal training in composition at the Naples Conservatorium of Music under the guidance of Francesco Paolo Tosti and Camillo de Nardis.

Giordano's first major success came in 1896 with his opera "Andrea Chénier," which premiered at La Scala in Milan. The opera is based on the life of the French poet André Chénier, who was executed during the French Revolution. The opera was an instant success, and its popularity has endured to this day. The aria "La Mamma Morta" from this opera was later featured in the Hollywood film "Philadelphia."

Giordano's other well-known works include "Fedora" and "Siberia," both of which premiered in 1898, and "Marcella," which premiered in 1907. Despite his initial success, Giordano's later works failed to capture the public's imagination, and he fell into relative obscurity in the 1920s.

Giordano died on November 12, 1948, in Milan, Italy. Although he is not as well-known as some of his contemporaries such as Puccini and Verdi, Giordano's contribution to Italian opera is significant. His ability to infuse his works with emotion and to create strong, memorable melodies continue to make his music popular today.
