Turlough Carolan was a renowned Irish composer, born in 1670 in Nobber, County Meath, Ireland. He was blind from a young age but this did not deter him from pursuing his love for music. Carolan is widely regarded as one of the most prominent harpers and composers of his time, and his music is still revered and enjoyed today.
Carolan was initially trained as a harpist, learning from local musicians around him. However, his musical career took off when he moved to Roscommon and became associated with the MacDermott Roe family. It was with them that he received wider attention and recognition for his compositions.
Carolan’s music is characterized by its unique blending of Irish traditional music with Baroque music styles. He is credited with composing over 200 pieces of music, many of which were inspired by and named after people he met throughout his travels. Carolan traveled extensively throughout his life, performing his music and gaining inspiration from the people and culture he encountered.
Carolan’s compositions have been arranged and adapted for various instruments, including the guitar, violin, and piano. Some of his most famous pieces include "Fanny Power", "Carolan's Draught" and "Planxty Irwin".
