Tomas de Torrejon y Velasco was a Spanish composer who lived during the Baroque period. Born on December 23, 1644, in the city of Seville, Torrejon y Velasco was one of the most important composers in Spain during his time.

Torrejon y Velasco started his musical journey as a choirboy at the Cathedral of Seville. He studied music with various composers, including Francisco Guerrero and Juan del Vado. He later became the maestro de capilla (music director) at the Cathedral of Lima in Peru, where he lived for the rest of his life.

Torrejon y Velasco composed several works during his time in Lima, including operas, oratorios, villancicos, and other religious pieces. He was most known for his zarzuelas, which were a Spanish form of musical theater. Torrejon y Velasco wrote several zarzuelas, including "La Purpura de la Rosa," which is considered to be the first opera composed in the Americas.

In addition to his musical achievements, Torrejon y Velasco was also a respected figure in the intellectual and cultural circles of Lima. He collaborated with the renowned writer and philosopher Juan de Espinosa Medrano on several literary projects.

Tomas de Torrejon y Velasco died in Lima on March 23, 1728, at the age of 83. He left behind a legacy as one of the most important Spanish composers of the Baroque period. His works continue to be performed and enjoyed around the world to this day.
