Full biography Thomas Selle
Thomas Selle (23 March 1599 – 2 July 1663) was a German baroque composer born in Zörbig , Saxony (now Germany). He is considered one of the most important composers of his time and was known for his sacred music compositions, which were greatly influenced by the Lutheran tradition. Selle served as a Kantor in various churches in Germany, including the Church of St. Mary in Göttingen, where he worked from 1653 until his death in 1663.
Selle's compositions were characterized by their use of multiple voice parts and complex harmonies, common in baroque music. He wrote a variety of works, including cantatas, motets, hymns, and other sacred pieces for use in church services. He was also known to have written secular pieces, such as songs and concertos, though the majority of his works were religious.
One of Selle's most notable works is his composition "Verzeichnis von Adjuvanten, welche zur Musik der Cantorey gehören" which served as a guide for the musicians who worked with him. The work consisted of over 500 pages of music, text, and instructions for performance, demonstrating Selle's meticulous approach to his craft.
Selle's music was highly regarded during his lifetime, and his compositions continued to be performed in Germany during the baroque and classical periods. Today, he is still considered an important figure in the history of sacred music and his works continue to be performed and recorded by contemporary ensembles.
