Steven Gerber (1948-2015) was an American composer known for his distinctive style that combined elements of traditional tonality with modern harmonies and rhythms. Born in Washington D.C., Gerber studied music at the Juilliard School and Haverford College before going on to earn a Ph.D. from the City University of New York. Over the course of his career, he composed more than 100 works for a variety of ensembles, including orchestra, chamber groups, and solo instruments.
Gerber's compositions have been highly praised for their lyricism, clarity, and emotional depth. His music often features sweeping melodies and lush harmonies, as well as moments of dissonance and complex rhythms. Some of his most notable works include his Symphony No. 1, Viola Concerto, and Cello Concerto.
In addition to his work as a composer, Gerber was also a respected music educator. He taught at Lehman College in New York City, the Aspen Music Festival, and the University of Hartford, where he was a professor of composition and theory.
Gerber's contributions to the world of music were widely recognized during his lifetime. He received numerous awards and honors, including the Rome Prize in Music, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2015, he passed away at the age of 66, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful and innovative music.
