Sonja Beets is a Dutch musician, composer, painter and poet who was born in Amsterdam in 1953. She finished her studies as a pianist and organ player at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. She is well-known for her music compositions and performances, especially for the carillon which is a musical instrument consisting of a set of bells that are played using a keyboard: Sonja Beets is a renowned composer of carillon music. Her compositions have been performed in various parts of the world, and she has won several international awards for her work. Some of her notable works include Concerto Op.69 which she composed in 2016.

Aside from music, she is also active in the fields of painting and poetry, and her works have been exhibited in a number of galleries in the Netherlands. Her notable exhibitions include Our Time: Me Too which she self-published on her website.

Sonja Beets is regarded as one of the most significant contemporary female composers for carillon, alongside Johanna Bordewijk-Roepman, Martine Altenburger, and Geert D'hollander. She has been a beacon for women who are interested in becoming carillonneurs(called carillonisten in Dutch).
