Homer studied under George Whiting, George Chadwick, and Jules Massenet. He was also a cousin of composer Samuel Barber's mentor and Louise Homer's husband Sidney Homer. Sidney Homer's wife, Louise Homer, was a renowned contralto in the Metropolitan Opera and was his constant muse.
Homer's songs were often written specifically for his wife's contralto voice, and he had a talent for setting texts in a way that was expressive and poignant. He composed more than 150 art songs, many of which were published by G. Schirmer. Some of his popular songs include "Sing to Me, Heart of Mine," "Where the Columbines Grow," and "The Blind Ploughman."
